The single rule that saves money: the longer the commitment, the lower the effective daily rate. If you already know you need a car for three months, book it as three months rather than renewing weekly. Renewing week by week is the most expensive way to rent a car in Qatar.
What should a car rental price in Qatar include?
A complete price should include comprehensive insurance, unlimited mileage, servicing and maintenance, accident repairs, a replacement vehicle while yours is off the road, and 24/7 roadside assistance. A quote that excludes any of these is not lower — it is incomplete.
This is where most price comparisons go wrong. Two quotes that look QAR 40 apart can be QAR 400 apart once you add what one of them left out.

What documents do you need to rent a car in Qatar?
Qatar residents need a valid Qatar driving licence and Qatar ID. Visitors need a valid home country driving licence, an International Driving Permit, and a passport with a valid entry visa. Everyone needs a credit card or cash for the security deposit.

If you hold a GCC licence from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman, you can drive in Qatar, but the permitted period depends on your residency status. Confirm your case with the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic before you travel.
One practical tip: send a photo of your licence when you book. Licence eligibility is checked against the vehicle category before a car is released, and doing that at booking rather than at handover avoids an unpleasant surprise at the counter.
How much is the security deposit for car rental in Qatar?
United Car Rentals requires a refundable security deposit of QAR 3,000, either blocked on a credit card or paid in cash. It is renewed every 30 days for ongoing rentals and released within 14 to 21 days after the vehicle is returned and inspected.
If you do not have a credit card - common for people who have just arrived in Qatar and are waiting on a bank account - the deposit can be paid in cash instead. Nothing else about the process changes.

What you should know about driving in Qatar
Qatar’s traffic regulations are governed by Traffic Law No. 19 of 2007 and enforced by the General Directorate of Traffic. They apply identically to residents and visitors — there is no tourist exemption.
The points that most often catch people out:
- Speed enforcement is camera-led and consistent. Radar cameras are widespread and do not stop at the city limits.
- Black points accumulate. Violations carry between one and seven points, and a licence is suspended at 14. Points reset on a rolling twelve-month basis.
- Phones must be hands-free. No exceptions.
- Children under 10 cannot sit in the front seat. Child seats are mandatory under four — request them when you book.
- Fines follow the rental contract. A fine issued to a rental vehicle is traced to the renter. Unpaid fines can create difficulties when leaving the country, so settle them before departure. Fines can be checked and paid through the Metrash2 app.
- Off-road driving is not insured. If you want to drive into the dunes at Sealine or Khor Al Adaid, use a licensed desert tour operator in their vehicle.
- Cross-border travel requires written authorisation from us in advance, plus additional insurance for the destination country. Not all vehicle categories are eligible.
