Travel essentials for a World Cup football fan

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is just around the corner and excitement for the event is building. As this is the first time that a World Cup match will be held in the Arab world,. To assist, we’ve put together a list of what you need to know before entering Qatar as well as travel essentials for every avid World Cup football fan.

  • Showing affection and intimacy in public is frowned upon.
  • Smoking in all public places is prohibited and violators will be fined.
  • Photography isn’t allowed in religious places, construction areas, or military sites. Visitors must also be aware of the ‘No photography allowed’ signs and never take photos of the locals without their permission
  • If you would like to show your appreciation for good service at a bar, restaurant, or café, Tipping is optional to show your happiness and satisfaction with their service and food.
  • Motorists drive on the right-hand side of the road. Do drive with caution and adhere to Qatar traffic rules.
  • Should you experience an emergency while in Qatar, the Police, Fire and Ambulance emergency number is 999.

Now that you’ve got a general idea as to what to expect when you’re visiting, here’s what you need to pack for your trip.

  1. Important documentation

At the top of our list is the paperwork. While we know that this can be a daunting task, these documents are essential for travel to Qatar:

  • Passport
  • Air tickets and boarding passes
  • Visa papers (should this be required)
  • Driver’s license should you want to rent a car in Qatar(International /country driving license.
  • Other travel documentation like medical/travel insurance
  • Vaccine certificate and negative Covid-19 certificate
  • FIFA-related documents (Hayya Card/Match Tickets).

  • Local currency or credit card

The Qatar Riyal is the only currency used. ATMs are easily accessible in hotels, malls, and Public places. VISA and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards.

  • Devices and chargers with power banks

The voltage in Qatar is 240 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. Plug points are plug type G with three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern. Should your chargers require less voltage, ensure to bring a voltage converter.

  • Emergency medication

It’s always a good idea to bring an emergency medical kit with you, no matter where in the world you’re traveling.

  • Masks

Qatar’s mask rules have recently been relaxed. It still remains to be seen as to whether masks will be required in the stadiums. However, it’s best to pack your masks as they are required in some public areas.

  • Supporter’s paraphernalia

Although there is sure to be sales of flags and other football paraphernalia, you might want to pack your own.

  • Sunscreen

As the World Cup will be in November, temperatures generally start falling. Be sure to pack sunscreen, a water bottle, sunglasses, hats and appropriate clothing.

Qatar also has strict restrictions on bringing certain items into the country. Here’s what not to pack:

  • Any kind of pork product
  • Weapons, firearms and ammunition
  • Narcotic drugs
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Illicit materials like pornography
