Working in Qatar: what you need to know

Working in Qatar

For years, expats have had their eye on Qatar. This small but high-income country has grown rapidly due to its oil and gas exports. To date, roughly two million internationals live and work in Qatar. Well-paid job opportunities and tax benefits are the draw cards, but if you’re looking to work in this diverse country, there are a few things you need to know.

  1. Business culture is different

Due to the vast range of expats in the country, there is no single business culture in Qatar. Handshakes are the normal greeting at meetings, however Qatari will seldomly shake hands with the opposite sex. Government offices usually open from 7am to 1pm, while private business can operate from 8am to 6pm. Friday is the weekend and most international companies are closed on Saturdays too.

  1. Well paid job opportunities exist

Industries such as oil, gas, finance, construction, hospitality and media offer a range of high paying jobs. Be sure to read the contract carefully before accepting any position. A housing allowance is an important addition to take into consideration. Rent is generally high and is required to be paid in a lump sum. This annual or quarterly payment and can be daunting. Fortunately, most accommodation fees are covered by employers, but it’s vital to check.

  1. Expats also enjoy tax-free salaries

Highly skilled people are able to secure excellent pay and top packages. One of the great attractions of Qatar is that no personal or income tax is payable against salaries or allowances. It is still important to do your homework though and check whether a double taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) exists between Qatar and your country of origin.

  1. Work visas are a must

There are rules and regulation around doing business in Qatar. Foreign nationals are not allowed to work in the country without a valid work visa. This is usually sponsored by the employer. Expats will however need to get to grips with the visa processes to ensure that all is in order before arriving in the country.

  1. Education is world-class

Should you move to Qatar with your family, you can rest in the knowledge that the education system is of the highest quality. Private international schools follow either an American or British curriculum. The country also employs top educators from across the world to ensure that the quality of education in both private and public schools is high. Tuition fees are expensive for private schooling and although there are free public schools, admission for non-Qatari nationals may be complicated.

  1. The healthcare system is impressive

Ambulances in Qatar are efficient. Medical staff are competent and well trained. Most expats receive healthcare insurance from their employer. If this is not part of the package, there is the option of applying for a Hamad Health Card. This allows for subsidised healthcare at the Hamad Medical Corporation.

  1. Qatar is a safe country to live in

With very low crime rates (even for petty crime), Qatar is a very safe country for both men and women. The roads are probably the most unsafe places as they are rather busy. Qatar is a driving city, so it’s best to lease a car for the duration of your stay. At United Car Rentals, we offer a wide range of vehicles for you. Adapting to life in Qatar might take a while. However, the expat community in Qatar is very welcoming. Before making the decision to move to Qatar, be sure to do your research and your stay is bound to be incredible.
