- Learn some Arabic greetings.
Even though English is widely spoken, making an effort with the local language is always appreciated. Good morning is Sabaah al-khayr and good afternoon is Massa’ al-khayr. Common greetings like As-salaam ‘alaykum which means Peace be upon you and the response of Wa ‘alaykum salaam are often used. Thank you is shukraan and please is raja’.
- Know how to greet according to sex
Men generally shake hands with men and might offer a hand to the heart as a sign of greeting to a woman.
- Watch your PDA
Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
- Dress modestly
Men and women visiting Qatar are expected to dress modestly. For women visiting mosques, head coverings will be required. Should you visit a public beach, swimwear should be modest too. Bikinis are fine when swimming at the hotel or resort pool.
- Barter at the local markets and shops is expected
This is part of the culture and is encouraged. When visiting a Souq, start bartering by giving a price lower than what you would pay and then work your way up.

- Bring banned items into the country
There can be severe punishment for bringing drugs, alcohol, pork products, pornography, into Qatar.
- Drink or get drunk in public

Alcohol is served in hotels and resort bars, however being drunk, or drinking in public places are prohibited.
Using foul language or offensive hand gestures in public can lead to serious punishment. So, it’s better to refrain from doing this completely.
- Throw rubbish or spit in the streets

Littering or spitting in public is punishable offence.
- Take photos or film in certain areas
Government, military buildings or areas as well as construction sites are places where filming and photography is prohibited. Failure to comply with the rules will result in serious legal action.
