The drive from Hamad International Airport into the city is short. West Bay sits roughly 15 to 20 kilometres away, and on a quiet evening you can be parked outside your hotel in under half an hour. For most first-time visitors, the longer part happens before that: producing documents nobody warned them about, and skimming an agreement written in language they have never had to read closely.

The documents you will be asked for
Original papers are checked, not photographs on a phone. Expect to present your passport with the entry stamp, your national driving licence, your entry visa if you are visiting, and either a credit card or cash for the security deposit.
The licence rule causes more problems than anything else. Visitors on a tourist or business visa may drive on their home licence for the first seven days after arrival. Beyond that, an International Driving Permit carried together with the original licence is recognised for up to six months from the date of entry. The permit must be issued in the same country as your licence, before you travel, because it cannot be obtained after you arrive. Licence holders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman are exempt and may drive on their national licence. Anyone planning car rental in Doha for longer than a week should arrange the permit at home.
Age matters too. The minimum with us is 21. Drivers between 21 and 24 face restrictions depending on the vehicle category, and premium SUVs and passenger vans generally require the driver to be 25 or above. Sending a photograph of your licence at the booking stage lets us confirm eligibility against the category you want, rather than discovering a mismatch at handover.
Counters at the terminal, and the alternative
Inside the terminal, rental desks are grouped on the ground floor of the Arrivals Hall, past baggage reclaim and customs, near the area where families wait for arriving passengers. Vehicles are collected from the short-term car park across the road. Not every desk is staffed around the clock, and several apply an after-hours charge for late collections.
We take a different route. What sits inside the rental rate
Two lines in most agreements decide how much a small mishap costs you: the damage waiver with its excess, and the fuel policy. Read them before signing, wherever you rent.
Our own terms are built to remove most of that guesswork. Comprehensive insurance is included in the rate, along with servicing, maintenance, and accident repairs, and a replacement vehicle is supplied if yours goes off the road. Mileage is unlimited as standard, so a run to Al Khor, Mesaieed, or Zekreet carries no per-kilometre charge. Roadside assistance operates 24 hours through our partnership with AAA Middle East, covering flat tyres, battery boosting, key-lock help, and towing anywhere in the country. Personal belongings and traffic fines fall outside the cover, as they do everywhere.
The refundable security deposit is QR 3,000. It can be blocked on a credit card or paid in cash, which helps visitors whose cards carry low limits abroad, and it is released 14 to 21 days after the vehicle is returned and inspected. Terms are set out in the contract before the vehicle leaves, without charges appearing later.
One point that changes trip planning: our minimum rental period is one week. Daily hire is not offered. From one week you can extend weekly, monthly, or annually, and the effective daily cost drops as the commitment lengthens. Visitors staying two or three nights are usually better served by taxis, while anyone here for a week or more will find a vehicle both cheaper and less restrictive.
Before you drive out of the car park
Walk around the vehicle and photograph it properly. Bumpers, wheel rims, the windscreen, and the roof are where existing marks hide. Check the fuel gauge against the contract, confirm the air conditioning cools quickly, and look at the tyres. Qatar's summer heat is unforgiving on rubber, which is one reason our fleet is serviced and inspected on a fixed schedule rather than between bookings.
Your first hour on Qatari roads
Traffic moves on the right, and the left lane is for overtaking only. Passing on the right, including using the hard shoulder, carries a heavy fine. Limits run around 40 to 50 km/h on residential streets, 60 km/h along the Corniche and inner city roads, 70 to 80 km/h on wider avenues, and up to 120 km/h on expressways, with signposted reductions in places.
Enforcement is thorough. Fixed cameras cover major roads, unmarked patrol cars run mobile radar, and violations are logged automatically against the vehicle in the Ministry of Interior system. Handheld phone use attracts a QAR 500 penalty. Alcohol carries zero tolerance and is treated as a criminal matter. Recordable fines paid within 30 days often qualify for a 50 per cent reduction, and outstanding fines must be cleared before you leave the country. Fines issued to our vehicles are traced to the rental contract and charged to the renter with an administration fee, so they can reach you after you have flown home.

Choosing a category that fits the trip
A small hatchback or saloon handles Doha comfortably, including the Corniche, Souq Waqif, Katara, and Lusail. Longer runs to Al Khor or Zekreet are easier in a medium saloon or an SUV. The inland sea at Khor Al Adaid needs a genuine 4x4 and dune experience, and standard agreements exclude off-road use, so a guided trip is the sensible option for most visitors. Groups travelling together are usually better off in a passenger van than in two separate cars.
