Qatar is heading into its busiest stretch of the year. Between 19 November and 18 December, the country will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, a 48-team FIFA tournament and its National Day - three separate crowds arriving in overlapping waves, all needing to move around the same small peninsula.
If you are travelling in for any of it, transport is the decision that will shape your trip more than your hotel will. This guide covers what is on, where it is, how to get between venues, and how to work out whether you need a car at all.
What major events are happening in Qatar in November and December 2026?
Qatar hosts three major events in late 2026: the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail International Circuit from 27 to 29 November, the FIFA U-17 World Cup across Aspire Zone from 19 November to 13 December, and Qatar National Day on 18 December. The tournament and the Grand Prix overlap during the same weekend.
That overlap is the detail most visitors miss. The F1 weekend falls inside the football tournament, which means the last weekend of November puts motorsport crowds at Lusail in the north and football crowds at Aspire Zone in the west on the same days.
The 2026 winter calendar in brief:
- Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition - 28 September to 3 October, at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre.
- FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 - 19 November to 13 December. Forty-eight teams and 104 matches, played across the Competition Complex in Aspire Zone, with the final at Khalifa International Stadium on 13 December.
- Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix - 27 to 29 November at Lusail International Circuit. The 2025 edition drew more than 162,000 spectators. There is no Sprint format in 2026, so the weekend runs to a conventional schedule.
- Qatar National Day - 18 December, marking the country’s unification under Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani.
Qatar is arriving at this season with real momentum behind it. Qatar Tourism recorded 2.338 million visitors in the first eight months of 2026, with August arrivals up 6.3% on July. Doha also holds the title of GCC Capital of Tourism for 2026. Expect the roads, and the rental fleets, to be busy.
Do you need to rent a car in Qatar for these events?
You need a car if you are staying more than a few days, attending events at more than one venue, or travelling outside Doha. Ride-hailing works for single trips within the city, but surge pricing during a Grand Prix weekend or a month-long tournament makes it an expensive way to cover an extended stay.
The pattern worth noticing: the longer your stay, the more strongly the numbers favour renting. A visitor here for the full tournament is looking at roughly 25 days of travel. At that duration, a monthly rental plan is not a marginal saving — it is a different order of cost.
Getting between the venues: what to expect on the road
The venues sit in three different directions from central Doha, and knowing that in advance changes how you plan your days.
Lusail International Circuit is north of the city, roughly 30 kilometres from central Doha via Al Khor Coastal Road or the Lusail Expressway. On a normal day it is a comfortable half-hour drive. On a race day, it is not. Circuit traffic on Grand Prix weekends builds several hours before the first session and clears slowly afterwards. Arrive early, or expect to sit.
Aspire Zone and Khalifa International Stadium sit in Al Rayyan, west of the centre, off Al Waab Street. With 104 matches across roughly four weeks, the traffic pattern here is different from a one-off event — it is a steady, daily rhythm rather than a single surge. Parking at Aspire is structured but fills on match evenings.
Katara, the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif and West Bay are your cultural and dining anchors, all within the central corridor. West Bay parking is the genuine constraint in this group; the Corniche side fills early most evenings.
What documents do you need to rent a car in Qatar as a visitor?
Visitors need a valid home country driving licence, an International Driving Permit, a passport with a valid entry visa, and a credit card or cash for the security deposit. An IDP is valid for driving in Qatar for up to six months from the date of entry, and the original home licence must be carried alongside it at all times.
A few points that catch people out:
- The IDP does not replace your home licence. Both documents are required by law, and both must be with you in the car.
- GCC licence holders are treated differently. If you hold a licence from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman, you can drive on it in Qatar — but the permitted period depends on your residency status. Confirm your specific case with the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic before you travel.
- Qatar residents simply need a valid Qatar driving licence and Qatar ID.
- Send a photo of your licence when you book. Licence eligibility is checked against the vehicle category before a car is released, and doing this at the booking stage rather than at handover saves an unhappy conversation at the counter.

Traffic rules visitors get wrong
Qatar’s traffic regulations are governed by Traffic Law No. 19 of 2007 and enforced by the General Directorate of Traffic. They apply identically to residents and visitors — there is no tourist exemption.
The rules that most often surprise people:
- Radar cameras are everywhere. Qatar’s speed enforcement is camera-led and consistent. Speeding is not a judgement call by a passing patrol car.
- Black points accumulate on your record. Violations carry between one and seven points, and a licence is suspended at 14 points. Points reset on a rolling twelve-month basis from each individual violation.
- Phones must be hands-free. No exceptions for a quick call.
- Children under 10 cannot sit in the front seat, and child seats are mandatory for children under four. If you are travelling with young children, request seats when you book rather than assuming they will be available.
- Fines follow the rental contract. A fine issued to a rental vehicle is traced to the renter. Unpaid fines can create problems when you leave the country, so settle them before departure. Fines can be checked and paid through the Metrash2 app.
